Fanfiction--Stamp by Chichiro Fanfiction--Stamp by Chichiro
EDIT: People, this stamp is over five years old. I no longer have very much of an opinion on fanfiction one way or another because I no longer do it, nor do I have interest in reading it. But enough people seem to enjoy the stamp that I'm leaving it up.
Also, I know "this, this, this and that" started as fanfiction but were published, "WHAT NOW?" you say. Well, good for them. The majority of fanfiction is not in this category, and the kind of fanfiction I meant (fanfiction.net fanfiction, self-insertion tv-show fanfictions, book pairings that'll never happen, etc, etc) is not going to be published unless it's in the form of a doujinshi or sommit.
So please, stop getting defensive over it. I am already well aware there are other arguments against this and I really don't much care to continue defending a stamp that was never meant to be taken very seriously, anyway.

Original description: 'Cause let's face it...Nobody's ever gonna publish their fanfictions. Least not legally. ;P A wise fanfiction basher once said that fanfiction can be good practice for real writing, and it's true.
Hopefully no fanfiction authors get on my back. :XD: I write fanfiction, too. Don't get me wrong, I love it...But it's never gonna go anywhere. :3

I TOTALLY AGREE. This is one stamp that makes me feel that my current, and up-and-coming fanfics will improve my writing skills.

As a fanfiction writer, I agree with this. I also write original stories, and I find fanfiction to be a great way to unblocking writer's block~

Fanfiction can be good practice. I write fanfiction so that I can improve on my original writing, and some of the scenes I come up with in my fanfiction sometimes make their way into my original work, but one of the scenes I have planned was inspired by a scene from my original project.

It might because you don't have to make up the characters

Most likely! If you know them well enough it's easy to figure out what they'd be likely to do. Luckily since I haven't written fanfiction in years, I can do the same for my own characters just as easily now. :)

True, no one could publish their fanficitons - but most people don't publish their journals, personal poetry, diaries, etc. either. That doesn't mean it's not real writing.

I too think of fanfiction as good practice, it keeps me on my toes, helps me grow in my writing style, and it's a fun way to explore fandoms. I just also consider it "real" writing too, because some people write some amazing stuff and really pour their hearts into it.

And to be truthful.. Most of the stories on fanfiction.net are crap, but the time you invest filing through them is worth it for that one story of that one author you know is going to make it someday for real, because no one that good can keep writing just fanfiction..

You make a good point. I've often wondered why people would dish out 100 chapters and over 100k words for fanfiction. If they have the ability to write so much, they should spend it writing original stuff. But then I know the joys of writing fanfiction can go beyond monetary. It will always have an immediate audience unlike original work. Makes for instant gratification which can be good too (sometimes). It can help develop confidence at least. As for practice, therein lies the danger. Fanfiction usually rests on the reader's pre-existing knowledge about the characters and setting. Original work requires much more detail so if the fanfiction writer aims to create original work, he must be conscious of the differences. Anyway, a good story is a good story irregardless if its fanfiction or not.

You know what, as a serious fanfiction writer and addict, I agree with this. Seeing how we as the fan-authors are not head of the books or video games or whatever, and are not even romotely related to the writing of the real thing, the farthest our hard work (that is, for those who actually /care/ about their fanfics) will go will probably only be on a site like FF. We only really write for the joy of it, or to improve our skills and what not. The most fame we'll ever get for our fics will be on the internet, but hey, I'm pretty sure we're all fine with that. Of course, I'm not saying that fanfictions are not real pieces of writing, seeing how people actually take the time to PUBLISH it on a site, but I get what you mean when you say "real writing." I honestly don't know why people would get worked up over something so... so small as this! It kind of IS the truth. Painfully, but still the truth.
Well, sorry for the ramble, I couldn't help myself.

It is rather annoying, seeing how fanfiction won't even MATTER in the real world. Sometimes I'm not even sure why I defend it like I do. Blah.

With all due respect, this is wrong. Things like the Star Wars EU and the Halo novelizations (See Halo: The Fall of Reach) fanfiction, at least originally? Prior to being recognized by the authors in question, they were works written about source material by people who didn't create it... which is fanfiction in a nutshell.

Of course, fanfiction is an excellent way to practice plot development, character growth, keep characterization consistent, and the technical aspects of writing. But it is incorrect to assert that fanfiction is not a legitimate form of writing.

Which has been pointed out several times, but this was never meant to be exactly a serious stamp. :P It's picking fun, nothing more.
As I've told other people who comment similar things, by "fanfiction" I mean the sort of things that end up on fanfiction.net, what people generally think of when they think of fanfiction.

If this edit was posted before (I don't recall it, but then I have the short term memory of a slug), sorry for missing it. If added, thanks for adding that clarification.

The main reason I'm getting defensive is that I COULD cite some authors on FF.net who I believe are good enough to get their work published. And even some that I don't like, but are certainly better than the authors of published works out there. My biggest complaint was simply the painting of all authors with a broad brush. That's really the only reason I bothered to be a bitchy prick in the first place. :P

Nope, added afterward 'cause I've gotten enough similar comments that I figured it was worth it to add. ;)

I understand completely. I also believe there are published writers out there who don't deserve to be published, so it goes both ways. But this is a one-time, small-area-for-text stamp, and adding tons an tons of clarifications on said stamp would kind of defeat the purpose. =P I was amused by the quote when someone said it to me and so made a stamp out of it. It's not the gospel, just applies to many.

Yes it is great practice. As in my eyes most of the background on the characters is set, most of the time you don't have to fill people in, and the rest of the world is yours to create. :)

That is so true. I want to be a writer, so fanfiction is a way of practice. I mean, you get feedback from people and whatnot, plus if you write well, like staying in character or describing things right, it is basically practice. If you can write fanfiction, you can write a novel.
